Throughout the school year we are learning several idioms, one at the beginning of each lesson..When we complete 15 idioms I assign my ST students to write a text that will include as many idioms of those we have learned as possible. Here are some of the students' efforts...not all perfect or 100% correct..., but worth a reading!!! :)
P.S. The underlined phrases are the idioms used.
I decided to get even with my friend Tom. I knew that there was more to this than meets the eye with him . I was like a fish out of water because I didn't know what to do with him. He took me for granted and I did not like it. I believed he was my best friend but I was wrong. I thought that I was the laughing stock of my class because all my friends knew. Then I said to myself : " You have to draw the line" and I think that I hit the nail on the head with that. He had made a nest egg because he had cheated me in every way. He painted the town red with the money he had stolen from me. He swallowed his pride when I told him that I knew everything. He asked me to forgive him and start from scratch. But I knew that it would be the same old story, so I told him that everything was over with us.
I'd like to tell you something that happened to my friend George. George went to a new school last year. He was new and felt like a fish out of water. The other boys didn't like him. They said that George was the laughing stock of the school and used to take his little nest-egg away from him. George was very sad and he swallowed his pride every time. " It's the same old story" he thought. "I must draw the line and make it stop!" Then he decided to have a big party. He invited all the boys. The other kids were surprised. "There's more to this than meets the eye" they thought, but they decided to go to the party. George was happy to see his classmates. Now he could play it safe. He was kind with them and said that they could start from scratch. The boys said that they were sorry to take him for granted and they would like to become best friends.
Last week I went to a party we had to paint the town red. One boy had become the laughing stock of the restaurant. Suddenly came the man who owned the restaurant. He scolded the boy and drew the line. Then the boy swallowed his pride. He who had the shop had hit the nail on the head, that's why the boy stopped immediately. Later came a lady who made a speech for a house destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt from scratch. All these things she said in a nutshell. After that a guy who worked there was caught stealing. This man was above suspicion and everyone was left with an open mouth. "How will I now collect a nest egg?" the man asked himself. All children were safe and everything was wonderful in the end.
One day a young man knocked on our door. In a nutshell he said that he was unemployed and he was asking for financial aid. My mum helped him. Since then he was coming often. My mother was feeling sorry about him, so he played it safe and asked for help. Every week it was the same old story. My father didn't believe him. Suddenly, one night, my dad met him in a bar. The young boy was painting the town red, spending his nest-egg. He was drunk and he was the laughing stock of the people in the bar. My dad was informed that the young boy was from a rich family. My dad met his parents and told them about their son. They didn't know anything. They swallowed their pride and promised that they would draw the line. My dad had hit the nail on the head.
I want to make new friends from scratch, because the friends which I had were not good. They thought that I was the laughing stock of the school and always made fun of me. I understood that there's more to this than meets the eye and I drew the lines. First, I didn't speak to my friends, because I wanted to get even. My friends took me for granted. One month later I found better friends and all the day we painted the town red with my nest-egg. In a nutshell, it's the same old story and my old friends had to swallow their pride!
Some time in the past I drew the line between one of my friends and me because something happened and I had to hit the nail on the head. I had a nest-egg, so when she found out she wanted me to lend her some money. Unfortunately, there was more to this than meets the eye. She never gave it back. Everything was so clear from the beginning but I didn't want to believe it. So, I swallowed my pride and didn't tell anyone that she never gave back the money. She played it safe, of course, because she knew how much I loved her. But in the end she became the laughing stock of everyone because one day she came back and asked me for some more money. Everyone knew that I didn't have any left!
